Rifapentine

An antibiotic used with other medicines to treat active and latent tuberculosis.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • active pulmonary tuberculosis (with other TB drugs)
  • latent TB infection (with isoniazid)

Common side effects

  • low red blood cells (anaemia)
  • low white blood cells
  • cough
  • back pain
  • rash

Cautions

  • can cause liver injury — watch for symptoms
  • stop at first sign of rash or allergy
  • turns body fluids red-orange; stains lenses and dentures
  • avoid in porphyria

Interactions

  • hormonal contraceptives — use non-hormonal or barrier method
  • HIV protease inhibitors and some reverse transcriptase inhibitors
  • many CYP450-metabolised drugs — levels may fall
