Clinical information

Common uses

  • vitamin A deficiency when oral intake is not possible
  • malabsorption syndrome

Cautions

  • avoid overdose — high doses are toxic
  • anaphylaxis and death reported with intravenous use
  • doses over 25,000 units daily need close supervision

Interactions

  • oral contraceptives (raise vitamin A blood levels)

Pregnancy: avoid high doses — may harm the baby
