Recombinant Human Erythropoietin Alpha

Injected hormone that stimulates red blood cell production.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • anaemia of chronic kidney disease
  • anaemia from zidovudine in HIV
  • anaemia from myelosuppressive chemotherapy
  • reducing transfusions around some elective surgery

Cautions

  • raises risk of death, heart attack, stroke and blood clots
  • can worsen or shorten survival in some cancers
  • blood pressure must be controlled; seizure risk in kidney disease
  • multi-dose vials (benzyl alcohol) not for infants or pregnancy

Pregnancy: multi-dose vials contraindicated — preservative risk
