Rasburicase

An enzyme infusion that lowers high uric acid during cancer treatment.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • managing high uric acid in leukaemia, lymphoma and solid tumours

Common side effects

  • vomiting and feeling sick
  • fever
  • swelling of the hands and feet
  • anxiety and headache
  • abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhoea

Cautions

  • can cause serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis (boxed warning)
  • must not be used in G6PD deficiency — haemolysis
  • can cause methaemoglobinaemia
  • given as a single course only

Interactions

  • interferes with uric acid blood tests — special sample handling needed

Pregnancy: avoid if possible — may harm an unborn baby
