Rasburicase

An enzyme infusion that lowers high uric acid during cancer treatment.

Clinical information

Common uses

managing high uric acid in leukaemia, lymphoma and solid tumours

Common side effects

vomiting and feeling sick
fever
swelling of the hands and feet
anxiety and headache
abdominal pain, constipation or diarrhoea

Cautions

can cause serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis (boxed warning)
must not be used in G6PD deficiency — haemolysis
can cause methaemoglobinaemia
given as a single course only

Interactions

interferes with uric acid blood tests — special sample handling needed

Pregnancy: avoid if possible — may harm an unborn baby
