Clinical information

Common uses

healing and maintaining reflux disease (GERD)
duodenal ulcers
H. pylori eradication with antibiotics
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Common side effects

pain
sore throat
wind (flatulence)
infection
constipation

Cautions

long-term use linked to bone fractures
low magnesium and vitamin B12 possible with long use
response can mask stomach cancer symptoms
stop if severe skin reactions develop

Interactions

rilpivirine (HIV) — must not be combined
warfarin (blood thinner) — monitor INR
methotrexate — levels may rise
atazanavir and nelfinavir (HIV) — avoid
