Rabeprazole Sodium

A proton pump inhibitor tablet that reduces stomach acid.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • healing and maintaining reflux disease (GERD)
  • duodenal ulcers
  • H. pylori eradication with antibiotics
  • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Common side effects

  • pain
  • sore throat
  • wind (flatulence)
  • infection
  • constipation

Cautions

  • long-term use linked to bone fractures
  • low magnesium and vitamin B12 possible with long use
  • response can mask stomach cancer symptoms
  • stop if severe skin reactions develop

Interactions

  • rilpivirine (HIV) — must not be combined
  • warfarin (blood thinner) — monitor INR
  • methotrexate — levels may rise
  • atazanavir and nelfinavir (HIV) — avoid
