Quetiapine

An antipsychotic medicine for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and severe depression.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • schizophrenia
  • bipolar disorder — mania and depression
  • severe depression, alongside other medicines

Common side effects

  • dry mouth
  • dizziness and drowsiness
  • constipation
  • fast heartbeat
  • weight gain

Cautions

  • do not stop suddenly — withdrawal symptoms possible
  • can cause metabolic syndrome — weight, blood pressure, blood sugar
  • may not suit heart, liver or blood pressure problems
  • do not drive if sleepy or dizzy

Interactions

  • certain heart medicines
  • some HIV medicines
  • antibiotics like erythromycin and clarithromycin
  • antifungals like clotrimazole and fluconazole
  • nefazodone for depression
  • grapefruit juice — do not drink

Pregnancy: can be used if needed — lowest effective dose
