Common uses

schizophrenia
bipolar disorder — mania and depression
severe depression, alongside other medicines

Common side effects

dry mouth
dizziness and drowsiness
constipation
fast heartbeat
weight gain

Cautions

do not stop suddenly — withdrawal symptoms possible
can cause metabolic syndrome — weight, blood pressure, blood sugar
may not suit heart, liver or blood pressure problems
do not drive if sleepy or dizzy

Interactions

certain heart medicines
some HIV medicines
antibiotics like erythromycin and clarithromycin
antifungals like clotrimazole and fluconazole
nefazodone for depression
grapefruit juice — do not drink

Pregnancy: can be used if needed — lowest effective dose
