Common uses

treatment of heparin overdose

Common side effects

sudden fall in blood pressure
slow heart rate
flushing and feeling of warmth
feeling sick or vomiting
back pain

Cautions

can cause severe low blood pressure and collapse (boxed warning)
higher risk with fish allergy, vasectomy or protamine-insulin use
must be given slowly with resuscitation equipment ready

Interactions

incompatible with some antibiotics, including several cephalosporins and penicillins

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
