Clinical information

Common uses

high blood pressure, angina and irregular heartbeat
physical symptoms of anxiety
preventing migraines
symptoms of too much thyroid hormone

Common side effects

headaches
feeling tired, dizzy or weak
cold fingers or toes
feeling or being sick
difficulty sleeping or nightmares

Cautions

do not stop suddenly — dose reduced gradually
not suitable with asthma or some lung diseases
first dose can cause dizziness — take at bedtime
can hide low blood sugar warning signs in diabetes

Interactions

other blood pressure medicines — pressure may drop too far
amiodarone, digoxin or flecainide for heart rhythm
insulin and other diabetes medicines
NSAIDs like ibuprofen — may raise blood pressure
cold and decongestant remedies
rizatriptan for migraines

Pregnancy: can be taken — baby's growth checked with extra scans
