Promethazine Hydrochloride

A drowsy (sedating) antihistamine for allergies, motion sickness and nausea.

Clinical information

Common uses

allergies like hay fever and hives
feeling and being sick from motion sickness or vertigo
sometimes itching in pregnancy

Common side effects

feeling tired during the daytime
nightmares
feeling dizzy or unsteady
difficulty concentrating
headaches

Cautions

do not drink alcohol while taking it
do not drive if sleepy or dizzy
not for children under 2; cough products not under 6
can affect allergy tests and home pregnancy tests

Interactions

antidepressants, including MAO inhibitors
opioid painkillers like codeine or morphine
amiodarone and other heart rhythm medicines
antibiotics such as erythromycin
epilepsy medicines
other drowsy or dry-mouth medicines

Pregnancy: can be taken in pregnancy
