Proguanil

An antimalarial taken as a combination tablet with atovaquone to prevent and treat malaria.

Clinical information

Common uses

preventing falciparum malaria, including chloroquine-resistant areas
treating uncomplicated falciparum malaria

Common side effects

headache
diarrhoea
abdominal pain
feeling sick and vomiting
mouth ulcers

Cautions

not for prevention with severe kidney impairment
liver problems including hepatitis reported
severe skin reactions can occur — stop immediately
not suitable for severe or cerebral malaria

Interactions

rifampin or rifabutin — not recommended
warfarin (blood thinner) — effect may be increased
tetracycline — monitor for reduced antimalarial effect

Pregnancy: only if prescribed — keep taking folate supplements
