Procaine Benzylpenicillin

A long-acting penicillin injection (procaine penicillin with benzathine penicillin) for bacterial infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

streptococcal throat, skin and soft-tissue infections
scarlet fever and erysipelas
moderately severe pneumococcal pneumonia and ear infection

Common side effects

allergic reactions such as rash or hives
pain, swelling or lumps at the injection site
feeling sick or vomiting

Cautions

never inject into a vein — cardiac arrest and death reported
do not use with penicillin or procaine allergy
severe skin reactions reported — stop if they develop

Interactions

tetracycline antibiotics — may work against penicillin; avoid
probenecid — raises and prolongs penicillin levels
drugs linked to methaemoglobinaemia (nitrates, dapsone, other local anaesthetics)
