Common uses

epilepsy
anxiety
nerve pain, such as from diabetes or shingles

Common side effects

feeling sleepy, tired or dizzy
headaches
diarrhoea
feeling or being sick
weight gain

Cautions

can be addictive — reduce dose gradually when stopping
can cause thoughts of self-harm — get urgent help
breathing problems possible with opioids or sedatives
missing doses may trigger seizures in epilepsy

Interactions

strong opioid painkillers like morphine, codeine or oxycodone
medicines that make you sleepy or dizzy
alcohol — best avoided; affects breathing and alertness
recreational drugs — dangerous breathing problems

Pregnancy: may slightly increase risk of birth defects — only if prescribed
