Pregabalin

A prescription medicine for epilepsy, anxiety and nerve pain.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • epilepsy
  • anxiety
  • nerve pain, such as from diabetes or shingles

Common side effects

  • feeling sleepy, tired or dizzy
  • headaches
  • diarrhoea
  • feeling or being sick
  • weight gain

Cautions

  • can be addictive — reduce dose gradually when stopping
  • can cause thoughts of self-harm — get urgent help
  • breathing problems possible with opioids or sedatives
  • missing doses may trigger seizures in epilepsy

Interactions

  • strong opioid painkillers like morphine, codeine or oxycodone
  • medicines that make you sleepy or dizzy
  • alcohol — best avoided; affects breathing and alertness
  • recreational drugs — dangerous breathing problems

Pregnancy: may slightly increase risk of birth defects — only if prescribed
