Prednisolone

A steroid tablet or liquid that reduces inflammation and calms the immune system.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • allergies, skin diseases and inflammation
  • autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis
  • blood disorders and certain cancers
  • preventing organ rejection after transplant

Common side effects

  • problems sleeping
  • weight gain
  • indigestion
  • sweating a lot
  • mild mood changes

Cautions

  • makes infections more likely — avoid chickenpox, shingles and measles contact
  • do not stop suddenly after more than 3 weeks
  • long-term use can thin bones and affect eyesight
  • carry a steroid card on long-term or high-dose treatment

Interactions

  • anti-inflammatory painkillers like ibuprofen and aspirin
  • live vaccines are not suitable
  • real liquorice — increases prednisolone levels and lowers potassium
  • many medicines — check before starting anything new

Pregnancy: can be taken — benefits usually outweigh risks
