Prasugrel

An antiplatelet (blood-thinning) tablet that prevents clots after heart attack or stenting.

Clinical information

Common uses

reducing clot-related events in acute coronary syndrome
patients treated with coronary stenting (PCI)

Common side effects

bleeding — the most common side effect

Cautions

can cause serious, sometimes fatal bleeding (boxed warning)
not for people with previous stroke or mini-stroke
generally not recommended over age 75
stop at least 7 days before planned surgery

Interactions

warfarin (blood thinner) — higher bleeding risk
heparin — higher bleeding risk
long-term NSAID painkillers — higher bleeding risk
opioids — may reduce prasugrel's effect

Pregnancy: only if prescribed — bleeding risk must be weighed
