Pralidoxime

An antidote injection for poisoning by organophosphate pesticides and nerve agents.

Clinical information

Common uses

organophosphate pesticide and nerve agent poisoning
overdose of anticholinesterase drugs used in myasthenia gravis

Common side effects

pain at the injection site
blurred or double vision
dizziness and headache
drowsiness and feeling sick
fast heart rate and raised blood pressure

Cautions

not effective for carbamate pesticide poisoning — may increase toxicity
not effective for poisons without anticholinesterase activity
can cause muscle weakness

Interactions

atropine — signs of atropine excess may appear earlier
barbiturates — use cautiously for convulsions
avoid morphine, theophylline, reserpine and phenothiazine tranquilisers
succinylcholine — prolonged paralysis reported
