Potassium supplement tablets for low blood potassium.

Clinical information

Common uses

treating low potassium (hypokalaemia)
preventing low potassium in at-risk patients, e.g. on digitalis

Common side effects

nausea and vomiting
wind
abdominal discomfort
diarrhoea

Cautions

dangerous if potassium is already high — can stop the heart
tablets can ulcerate the gut — reserved for those who need them
not with conditions that slow tablets' passage through the gut

Interactions

potassium-sparing diuretics (spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride) — hyperkalaemia
ACE inhibitors (hyperkalaemia)

Pregnancy: unlikely to harm if potassium stays normal
