Pomalidomide

A thalidomide-analogue capsule for multiple myeloma and Kaposi sarcoma.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • multiple myeloma after prior treatments (with dexamethasone)
  • AIDS-related and HIV-negative Kaposi sarcoma

Common side effects

  • tiredness and weakness
  • low white blood cells (neutropenia)
  • anaemia
  • constipation
  • feeling sick and diarrhoea

Cautions

  • boxed warning: causes severe birth defects — strict pregnancy prevention required
  • boxed warning: blood clots, heart attack and stroke — preventive therapy advised
  • monitor blood counts — neutropenia is frequent
  • liver failure and severe skin reactions reported

Interactions

  • strong CYP1A2 inhibitors (avoid, or reduce pomalidomide dose)

Pregnancy: never use in pregnancy — causes severe birth defects
