An osmotic laxative drink that cleans out the bowel before colonoscopy.

Clinical information

Common uses

bowel cleansing before colonoscopy
bowel cleansing before barium enema X-ray

Common side effects

feeling sick
abdominal fullness and bloating
stomach cramps
vomiting
anal irritation

Cautions

not with bowel obstruction, perforation, ileus or toxic colitis
can upset fluids and salts — drink plenty and review other medicines
caution with kidney problems, seizure history or heart rhythm risk

Interactions

oral medicines taken within 1 hour (may not be absorbed)
medicines that upset fluids and salts (added risk of problems)
