Piperacillin + tazobactam

Clinical information

Common uses

intra-abdominal infections
hospital-acquired and community-acquired pneumonia
skin and skin structure infections
female pelvic infections

Common side effects

diarrhoea
constipation
feeling sick
headache
trouble sleeping

Cautions

not for people allergic to penicillins or cephalosporins — serious reactions possible
severe skin reactions — stop if rash progresses
seizure risk at high doses, especially with kidney impairment
kidney injury seen in critically ill patients; C. difficile diarrhoea possible

Interactions

tobramycin (levels fall in dialysis patients)
vancomycin (higher risk of kidney injury)
probenecid (prolongs drug levels)
heparin and oral anticoagulants (monitor clotting)
vecuronium and similar muscle relaxants (prolonged effect)
