Phentermine + Topiramate

Clinical information

Common uses

  • weight loss in obesity
  • weight loss when overweight with a weight-related condition

Common side effects

  • tingling (paraesthesia)
  • dizziness
  • taste changes
  • trouble sleeping
  • constipation and dry mouth

Cautions

  • must not be used in pregnancy — causes birth defects
  • can trigger acute glaucoma — urgent review for eye pain or vision change
  • watch for depression or suicidal thoughts
  • may slow thinking — caution driving; do not stop suddenly

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants (contraindicated — hypertensive crisis)
  • alcohol and other sedatives
  • oral contraceptives (spotting possible)
  • non-potassium-sparing diuretics (low potassium)
  • valproic acid (high ammonia, low temperature)
  • other carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (acidosis, kidney stones)

Pregnancy: do not use — causes birth defects
