Pentoxifylline

A tablet that improves blood flow, used for leg pain on walking (intermittent claudication).

Clinical information

Common uses

intermittent claudication from poor leg circulation

Cautions

not for people with recent brain or eye bleeding
not if intolerant to caffeine-like drugs (methylxanthines)
bleeding has been reported, especially with blood thinners

Interactions

warfarin and vitamin K antagonists (monitor clotting)
NSAIDs and antiplatelet drugs (bleeding reported)
theophylline (levels rise — toxicity possible)
ciprofloxacin or fluvoxamine (raise pentoxifylline levels)
cimetidine (raises levels)
blood pressure medicines (may need dose lowered)
