An injectable growth factor that boosts white blood cells during chemotherapy.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • reduce infection risk (febrile neutropenia) during chemotherapy
  • improve survival after high-dose radiation exposure

Common side effects

  • bone pain
  • pain in the arms or legs

Cautions

  • report left upper tummy or shoulder pain — possible spleen rupture
  • serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis can occur
  • can trigger sickle cell crises in sickle cell disorders
  • breathing problems with fever need urgent review (ARDS)
