Papaverine is an injection that relieves smooth muscle spasm in blood vessels and internal organs.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • blood vessel spasm (heart, brain, limbs)
  • colic spasm of gut, bile duct or ureter

Common side effects

  • flushing of the face
  • feeling sick or stomach discomfort
  • headache
  • dizziness (vertigo)
  • sweating

Cautions

  • not for use with complete heart block
  • not for injection into the penis — persistent priapism reported
  • liver inflammation reported rarely

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
