Pantoprazole

Pantoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid for heartburn, reflux and ulcers.

Clinical information

Common uses

heartburn and acid reflux (GORD)
preventing and treating stomach ulcers
Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Common side effects

headaches
diarrhoea
feeling sick or being sick
constipation
dry mouth or tiredness

Cautions

not usually recommended in pregnancy
long-term use: low magnesium, B12 deficiency, bone fractures
may hide stomach cancer symptoms and endoscopy findings
without prescription, see a doctor if no better after 2 weeks

Interactions

antifungal medicines (itraconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole)
methotrexate
HIV medicines
rifampicin (antibiotic)
warfarin (blood thinner)
St John's wort — do not take

Pregnancy: not usually recommended — omeprazole preferred
