Oxytocin

A hormone infusion (Pitocin) used to start or strengthen labour.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • inducing labour for medical reasons
  • strengthening labour contractions

Common side effects

  • nausea
  • vomiting

Cautions

  • hospital use with continuous monitoring only
  • not for elective induction without medical need
  • overdose can cause dangerously strong contractions or uterine rupture
  • water intoxication reported with prolonged slow infusion

Interactions

  • vasoconstrictor drugs with caudal block anaesthesia (severe hypertension)
  • cyclopropane anaesthesia

Pregnancy: used in labour under hospital supervision
