Omeprazole

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid for heartburn, reflux and ulcers.

Clinical information

Common uses

heartburn and acid reflux (GORD)
stomach ulcers
Helicobacter pylori infection (with antibiotics)

Common side effects

headache
stomach pain
feeling sick or being sick
constipation or diarrhoea
farting more than usual

Cautions

without prescription, do not take for over 2 weeks
long-term use can lower vitamin B12 and weaken bones
can hide symptoms of serious conditions like stomach cancer
may affect some test results — tell hospital staff

Interactions

other acid reducers (lansoprazole, famotidine)
digoxin (heart medicine)
warfarin and clopidogrel (blood thinners)
diazepam (sedative)
phenytoin (anti-seizure medicine)
St John's wort and HIV medicines (nelfinavir, atazanavir)
