Omalizumab

Omalizumab is an anti-IgE injection for severe allergic asthma, nasal polyps, food allergy and chronic hives.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • moderate to severe allergic asthma
  • chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps
  • reducing reactions in IgE-mediated food allergy
  • chronic spontaneous urticaria (hives)

Common side effects

  • joint pain
  • tiredness
  • dizziness
  • headache
  • injection site reactions

Cautions

  • boxed warning: anaphylaxis can occur, even after many doses
  • treatment started in a healthcare setting
  • not for sudden asthma attacks or emergencies
  • malignancies observed in clinical studies

Pregnancy: registry showed no rise in birth defects — only if prescribed
