Olmesartan Medoxomil

Olmesartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker tablet that lowers high blood pressure.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood pressure (adults and children 6+)

Common side effects

  • dizziness

Cautions

  • boxed warning: can injure or kill an unborn baby — stop if pregnant
  • can cause severe chronic diarrhoea (sprue-like enteropathy)
  • low blood pressure possible if dehydrated or salt-depleted
  • kidney function may worsen in susceptible people

Interactions

  • potassium supplements or potassium-raising medicines
  • NSAIDs — kidney risk and weaker blood pressure effect
  • aliskiren — do not combine if diabetic
  • colesevelam — take olmesartan 4 hours before it
  • lithium — levels can rise

Pregnancy: do not use — can injure or kill the unborn baby
