Olanzapine

Olanzapine is an antipsychotic used for schizophrenia and mania in bipolar disorder.

Clinical information

Common uses

schizophrenia
mania in bipolar disorder
preventing mania coming back

Common side effects

feeling sleepy
weight gain and increased appetite
feeling dizzy
rash
constipation

Cautions

can raise blood sugar — regular blood tests; diabetes possible
do not stop suddenly — symptoms may return
can affect cholesterol with long-term use
avoid alcohol at first — increases sleepiness

Interactions

carbamazepine (epilepsy medicine)
fluvoxamine (antidepressant)
ciprofloxacin (antibiotic)
sedating medicines (benzodiazepines, morphine, tramadol, antihistamines)
cannabidiol (CBD) — do not take

Pregnancy: can be taken in pregnancy — not thought harmful
