Clinical information

Common uses

  • severe, acute low blood pressure in adults

Common side effects

  • high blood pressure
  • slow heart rate
  • anxiety and headache
  • breathing difficulty

Cautions

  • leakage into tissue can cause local tissue death — large vein used
  • stopping suddenly can crash blood pressure — tapered gradually
  • can cause heart rhythm problems
  • contains sulfite — possible allergic reactions

Interactions

  • MAOIs and tricyclic-type antidepressants (severe hypertension)
  • cyclopropane and halothane anaesthetics (heart rhythm irritability)

Pregnancy: used for emergencies — untreated shock is more dangerous
