Clinical information

Common uses

severe, acute low blood pressure in adults

Common side effects

high blood pressure
slow heart rate
anxiety and headache
breathing difficulty

Cautions

leakage into tissue can cause local tissue death — large vein used
stopping suddenly can crash blood pressure — tapered gradually
can cause heart rhythm problems
contains sulfite — possible allergic reactions

Interactions

MAOIs and tricyclic-type antidepressants (severe hypertension)
cyclopropane and halothane anaesthetics (heart rhythm irritability)

Pregnancy: used for emergencies — untreated shock is more dangerous
