Nitroglycerine / Glyceryl Trinitrate

Glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) is a nitrate that treats and prevents angina chest pain, and treats anal fissures.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • relieving angina attacks
  • preventing angina before exercise
  • daily patches to prevent angina
  • rectal ointment for anal fissures

Common side effects

  • headaches (very common)
  • feeling dizzy, weak, tired or sleepy
  • feeling sick
  • flushing (red face)

Cautions

  • never use with erection medicines like sildenafil
  • call 999 if chest pain lasts 10 minutes after 2 doses
  • tablets expire 8 weeks after opening the bottle
  • can make you dizzy or faint — do not drive

Interactions

  • erection medicines (sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil) — do not combine
  • blood pressure and heart medicines
  • heparin (anticoagulant)
  • ergotamine-type migraine medicines
  • regular NSAIDs (ibuprofen, aspirin) — may worsen angina
  • alcohol — increases dizziness and fainting
