Nimodipine

Nimodipine is a capsule that improves outcomes after bleeding around the brain (subarachnoid haemorrhage).

Clinical information

Common uses

reducing brain damage after subarachnoid haemorrhage

Common side effects

low blood pressure
headache
diarrhoea
rash
feeling sick

Cautions

never inject — capsules are for swallowing only; deaths reported
combining with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors is contraindicated
strong CYP3A4 inducers can stop it working

Interactions

clarithromycin and similar antibiotics — do not combine
azole antifungals such as ketoconazole — do not combine
HIV protease inhibitors such as ritonavir — do not combine
nefazodone (antidepressant) — do not combine
rifampin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, St John's wort — avoid
blood pressure medicines — effect may be enhanced
