Nifedipine

Nifedipine is a calcium-channel blocker for high blood pressure, angina and Raynaud's.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood pressure
  • angina
  • Raynaud's (poor blood flow to fingers and toes)

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • flushing
  • feeling generally unwell
  • constipation
  • swollen ankles

Cautions

  • may not suit people with heart failure or unstable angina
  • can lower blood pressure too much
  • avoid grapefruit — increases side effects
  • tell your doctor about severe liver or kidney problems

Interactions

  • other blood pressure medicines
  • some antibiotics
  • cimetidine (stomach ulcer medicine)
  • digoxin and beta blockers (heart medicines)
  • carbamazepine (epilepsy medicine)
  • antifungal medicines

Pregnancy: usually fine to take in pregnancy
