Nicorandil

Nicorandil is a prescription tablet that treats and prevents chest pain caused by angina.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • treating angina chest pain
  • preventing angina attacks

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • feeling sick or being sick
  • flushing
  • dizziness and weakness

Cautions

  • may not suit people with low blood pressure or kidney problems
  • can cause ulcers of the skin, stomach or eyes
  • do not use salt substitutes — potassium can rise too high
  • do not drive if dizzy or weak

Interactions

  • blood pressure medicines
  • erection medicines such as sildenafil (Viagra)
  • antidepressants such as amitriptyline
  • NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or aspirin
  • steroid tablets and potassium supplements
  • alcohol — increases dizziness
