Clinical information

Common uses

HIV-1 infection, combined with other antiretrovirals
adults and children from 15 days old

Common side effects

rash (common, occasionally severe)

Cautions

life-threatening liver toxicity, especially first 18 weeks
severe, sometimes fatal skin reactions
highest liver risk in women with higher CD4 counts
not for moderate-severe liver disease or post-exposure prophylaxis

Interactions

St John's wort (avoid — lowers nevirapine levels)
efavirenz (not recommended together)
warfarin (complex effect on clotting times)
induces CYP3A/2B6 — lowers levels of many other medicines

Pregnancy: extra liver risk in pregnancy with higher CD4 counts
