Neomycin Sulphate

Oral aminoglycoside antibiotic for gut bacteria.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • infections caused by susceptible bacteria (oral tablets)

Common side effects

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • malabsorption with prolonged use

Cautions

  • can permanently damage hearing and kidneys, even at recommended doses
  • hearing loss can appear after stopping the drug
  • not with intestinal obstruction or ulcerative bowel disease
  • can cause muscle paralysis with anaesthetics

Interactions

  • other kidney- or ear-toxic drugs (added toxicity)
  • muscle relaxants and anaesthetics (paralysis risk)
  • penicillin V, vitamin B12, methotrexate, digoxin (absorption reduced)
  • warfarin-type anticoagulants (effect enhanced)

Pregnancy: avoid — aminoglycosides can harm the baby's hearing
