Naproxen

An anti-inflammatory painkiller (NSAID) that relieves pain and reduces swelling.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • period pain
  • joint and muscle pain
  • gout
  • osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

Common side effects

  • constipation or diarrhoea
  • dizziness
  • bloating and stomach pain
  • headaches
  • feeling or being sick

Cautions

  • take with or after food to protect your stomach
  • can cause stomach ulcers or bleeding
  • may not suit heart, liver, kidney or stomach conditions, or asthma
  • no more than 3 days without a prescription

Interactions

  • blood thinners such as warfarin
  • steroids such as prednisolone
  • diuretics such as furosemide
  • heart and blood pressure medicines such as enalapril
  • methotrexate
  • other NSAIDs like ibuprofen or aspirin (do not combine)
