Naltrexone Hydrochloride

Clinical information

Common uses

  • alcohol dependence (as part of a treatment plan)
  • blocking the effects of opioids

Common side effects

  • feeling sick

Cautions

  • never take while still using opioids — triggers severe withdrawal
  • can injure the liver at high doses
  • opioid painkillers and opioid cough or diarrhoea remedies will not work

Interactions

  • opioid-containing medicines (their effect is blocked)
  • disulfiram (combined liver strain)
  • thioridazine (lethargy and drowsiness)
