N-Acetylcysteine

Mucus-thinning medicine, also the antidote to paracetamol overdose.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • loosening thick mucus in chronic and acute chest disease
  • cystic fibrosis lung complications and tracheostomy care
  • antidote for paracetamol (acetaminophen) overdose

Common side effects

  • feeling sick or vomiting
  • mouth soreness (stomatitis)
  • runny nose
  • drowsiness and clamminess
  • chest tightness

Cautions

  • can trigger bronchospasm — asthmatics watched closely
  • loosened secretions may need suctioning if cough is weak
  • rare allergic rash or hives with oral antidote use
  • for overdose, start within 24 hours of ingestion

Interactions

  • mixing with other drugs in a nebuliser — stability not established
