Mycophenolate Mofetil

An immunosuppressant taken after a kidney, heart or liver transplant to prevent organ rejection.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing organ rejection after kidney, heart or liver transplant

Common side effects

  • diarrhoea
  • low white blood cells
  • infections
  • vomiting

Cautions

  • causes miscarriage and birth defects — reliable contraception essential (boxed warning)
  • raises risk of lymphoma and skin cancer (boxed warning)
  • raises risk of serious infections (boxed warning)
  • avoid live vaccines; no blood donation during and 6 weeks after

Interactions

  • antacids containing magnesium or aluminium
  • proton pump inhibitors
  • telmisartan
  • calcium-free phosphate binders
  • oral contraceptives (may work less well — add barrier method)

Pregnancy: avoid — high risk of miscarriage and birth defects
