Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride

A fluoroquinolone antibiotic tablet for serious bacterial infections such as pneumonia.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • community-acquired pneumonia
  • skin and intra-abdominal infections
  • plague
  • sinusitis and bronchitis flare-ups (only if no alternative)

Common side effects

  • feeling sick
  • diarrhoea
  • headache
  • dizziness

Cautions

  • can cause tendon rupture, nerve damage and mental effects — stop immediately (boxed warning)
  • avoid with myasthenia gravis — worsens muscle weakness
  • can disturb heart rhythm (QT prolongation)
  • see a doctor if diarrhoea develops (C. difficile risk)

Interactions

  • antacids, sucralfate or mineral-containing multivitamins (take 4 hours before or 8 after)
  • warfarin (blood thinner — bleeding risk)
  • class IA and III heart-rhythm medicines (avoid)
  • diabetes medicines (blood sugar swings)

Pregnancy: may harm the baby (animal data) — only if prescribed
