Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride

A fluoroquinolone antibiotic tablet for serious bacterial infections such as pneumonia.

Clinical information

Common uses

community-acquired pneumonia
skin and intra-abdominal infections
plague
sinusitis and bronchitis flare-ups (only if no alternative)

Common side effects

feeling sick
diarrhoea
headache
dizziness

Cautions

can cause tendon rupture, nerve damage and mental effects — stop immediately (boxed warning)
avoid with myasthenia gravis — worsens muscle weakness
can disturb heart rhythm (QT prolongation)
see a doctor if diarrhoea develops (C. difficile risk)

Interactions

antacids, sucralfate or mineral-containing multivitamins (take 4 hours before or 8 after)
warfarin (blood thinner — bleeding risk)
class IA and III heart-rhythm medicines (avoid)
diabetes medicines (blood sugar swings)

Pregnancy: may harm the baby (animal data) — only if prescribed
