Morphine

A strong opioid painkiller used to treat severe pain.

Clinical information

Common uses

severe pain after surgery or injury
cancer pain
end of life (palliative) care

Common side effects

constipation
feeling or being sick
feeling sleepy
dizziness
confusion

Cautions

can be addictive — do not stop suddenly, dose reduced gradually
taking an extra dose can be dangerous
may not suit people with lung, liver, heart or bowel conditions
do not drive if drowsy, dizzy or confused

Interactions

other opioid painkillers such as codeine
MAOI antidepressants
nerve-pain and seizure medicines such as gabapentin
sedatives such as diazepam
some anti-sickness and stomach-ulcer medicines
alcohol (best avoided)
