Morphine

A strong opioid painkiller used to treat severe pain.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • severe pain after surgery or injury
  • cancer pain
  • end of life (palliative) care

Common side effects

  • constipation
  • feeling or being sick
  • feeling sleepy
  • dizziness
  • confusion

Cautions

  • can be addictive — do not stop suddenly, dose reduced gradually
  • taking an extra dose can be dangerous
  • may not suit people with lung, liver, heart or bowel conditions
  • do not drive if drowsy, dizzy or confused

Interactions

  • other opioid painkillers such as codeine
  • MAOI antidepressants
  • nerve-pain and seizure medicines such as gabapentin
  • sedatives such as diazepam
  • some anti-sickness and stomach-ulcer medicines
  • alcohol (best avoided)
