Mometasone

A steroid preventer inhaler used every day to control asthma.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing asthma symptoms (daily preventer inhaler)
  • also made as skin cream (eczema) and nasal spray (hay fever)

Common side effects

  • sore throat or hoarse voice
  • oral thrush
  • headaches

Cautions

  • rinse your mouth after each use to prevent thrush
  • does not treat asthma attacks — use your reliever inhaler
  • can raise infection risk — avoid chickenpox, shingles and measles contact
  • high doses may need a steroid card

Interactions

  • HIV medicines such as ritonavir or cobicistat
  • antifungals such as itraconazole
  • other steroid-containing medicines

Pregnancy: safe to use in pregnancy
