Misoprostol

A stomach-protecting medicine used to prevent ulcers caused by NSAID painkillers.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • preventing stomach ulcers in people taking NSAIDs at high risk

Cautions

  • never take if pregnant — causes birth defects, abortion or uterine rupture (boxed warning)
  • do not give the medicine to anyone else
  • women who could become pregnant need a pregnancy test and contraception
  • labour-related uses are hospital-only

Interactions

  • oxytocin (labour drug) — effects increased, avoid within 4 hours
  • no significant interaction with aspirin, diclofenac or ibuprofen

Pregnancy: never in pregnancy — causes abortion and birth defects
