Mirtazapine

An antidepressant used to treat depression and sometimes OCD and anxiety.

Clinical information

Common uses

depression
obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
anxiety

Common side effects

dry mouth
increased appetite and weight gain
headaches
feeling sleepy
feeling or being sick

Cautions

do not stop suddenly — dose is reduced gradually
can cause sleepiness — avoid driving until you know its effect
can make blood sugar harder to control in diabetes
get urgent help for thoughts of self-harm

Interactions

other antidepressants (risk of very high blood pressure)
sedating medicines like morphine or diazepam
warfarin (blood thinner)
carbamazepine or phenytoin (reduce its effect)
rifampicin (reduces its effect)
St John's wort (avoid)
