Minocycline

A tetracycline antibiotic used for a range of bacterial infections and severe acne.

Clinical information

Common uses

respiratory, urinary and skin infections
some sexually transmitted infections
severe acne (add-on treatment)

Common side effects

feeling sick or vomiting
diarrhoea
dizziness or spinning sensation
headache
skin more sensitive to sunburn

Cautions

avoid in pregnancy and children under 8 — permanently stains developing teeth
dizziness can affect driving
stop immediately if a severe rash develops (DRESS reported)
raised pressure in the skull can occur — report vision changes

Interactions

isotretinoin (avoid — both raise pressure in the skull)

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm the baby's teeth and bones
