Minocycline

A tetracycline antibiotic used for a range of bacterial infections and severe acne.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • respiratory, urinary and skin infections
  • some sexually transmitted infections
  • severe acne (add-on treatment)

Common side effects

  • feeling sick or vomiting
  • diarrhoea
  • dizziness or spinning sensation
  • headache
  • skin more sensitive to sunburn

Cautions

  • avoid in pregnancy and children under 8 — permanently stains developing teeth
  • dizziness can affect driving
  • stop immediately if a severe rash develops (DRESS reported)
  • raised pressure in the skull can occur — report vision changes

Interactions

  • isotretinoin (avoid — both raise pressure in the skull)

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm the baby's teeth and bones
