Midazolam

A sedative given by injection before or during surgery and medical procedures.

Clinical information

Common uses

sedation before or during medical procedures
starting general anaesthesia
sedation of ventilated patients in intensive care

Common side effects

slowed or paused breathing
hiccups
nausea or vomiting
pain or tenderness at the injection site
headache

Cautions

can stop breathing — only used with monitoring and resuscitation equipment (boxed warning)
with opioids can cause profound sedation, coma and death
not for people with acute narrow-angle glaucoma
doses must be individualised and injected slowly

Interactions

opioids (dangerous breathing depression)
erythromycin (prolongs sedation)
diltiazem or verapamil (prolong sedation)
ketoconazole or itraconazole (antifungals)
cimetidine
saquinavir (HIV medicine)

Pregnancy: late use can sedate the newborn and cause withdrawal
