Metronidazole

An antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, mouth and vagina.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • skin infections and rosacea
  • mouth infections and dental abscesses
  • bacterial vaginosis
  • pelvic inflammatory disease

Common side effects

  • feeling or being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • metallic taste or furry tongue
  • dry or irritated skin (cream or gel)

Cautions

  • do not drink alcohol during and for 2 days after treatment
  • finish the full course even if you feel better
  • can interfere with some blood test results
  • tell your doctor if you have liver problems or have dialysis

Interactions

  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • lithium
  • disulfiram (for alcohol dependence)
  • phenytoin or phenobarbitone (epilepsy medicines)
  • ciclosporin
  • fluorouracil or busulfan (cancer medicines)
