Methylprednisolone Acetate

A long-acting injectable corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation, including joint injections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • inflammatory conditions (intramuscular injection)
  • localised joint conditions (injection into the joint)

Cautions

  • never inject into the spine (intrathecal) — severe harm reported
  • epidural use linked to serious neurologic events
  • lowers infection resistance — not with body-wide fungal infections
  • can raise blood sugar and suppress adrenal glands

Interactions

  • ketoconazole and macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin) — raise steroid levels
  • rifampin, phenytoin, carbamazepine — reduce steroid effect
  • warfarin — response changed, monitor clotting
  • aspirin and NSAIDs — more stomach side effects
  • diabetes medicines — doses may need adjusting
  • live vaccines — response reduced, defer if possible

Pregnancy: only if potential benefit justifies risk to the baby
