Methylergometrine/ Methylergonovine maleate

An ergot medicine that contracts the womb to control bleeding after childbirth.

Clinical information

Common uses

womb bleeding and poor womb contraction after delivery
bleeding control after delivery of the anterior shoulder

Common side effects

high blood pressure, sometimes with headache
headache
tummy pain from womb contractions
nausea or vomiting

Cautions

never use during pregnancy or with high blood pressure
IV use can cause sudden hypertension or stroke
heart attack risk with coronary artery disease
store away from newborn medicines — accidental dosing has occurred

Interactions

strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (clarithromycin, ritonavir, ketoconazole) — do not combine
grapefruit juice — do not combine
CYP3A4 inducers (rifampin, nevirapine) — reduced effect
beta blockers — stronger blood vessel constriction
nitrates and antianginal medicines — reduced effect
other vasoconstrictors and ergot medicines — caution

Pregnancy: do not use during pregnancy — for after delivery only
